Fish
Oil Capsules
Q: Im hearing more and more about fish
oil capsules, should all of us be taking these and what are the benefits?
A: Recently
the American Heart Association (AHA) has issued new guidelines regarding
the consumption of fish and/or fish oil capsules. Eicosapentaenic acid
(EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the two principle fatty acids
found in fish and are also known as omega 3-fatty acids. EPA and DHA may
help lower triglycerides and prevent sudden death from a heart attack.
AHA
recommendations are:
-
If
you have no history of heart disease you should consume 4 servings of
oily fish (albacore tuna, salmon, mackerel, trout, blue fish, anchovies,
catfish) weekly along with canola oil, soybean oil, walnuts, wheat germ,
nuts and seeds.
- If
you have a history of heart disease the new recommended intake is 1gm/day
of EPA and DHA. You may need fish oil capsules to reach this level in
addition to oily fish.
- If
you have elevated triglycerides, 2-4gm/day of EPA and DHA is advised.
Levels
of omega -3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) can vary in supplements. Consumerlab.com tested supplements for their levels of EPA and DHA, mercury contaminants
and decomposition. Some of the products that passed their tests include:
