Probiotics
Q: What are probiotics?
A: Probiotics
are "friendly" bacteria. The fastest growing category of functional foods
is probiotics which contributes a source of beneficial bacteria to our
diet.
The
strongest evidence for probiotics is focused on digestive-tract problems.
Additional studies are suggesting probiotics may help decrease
risk of colon cancer, lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.
Yogurt
can be a source of probiotics if the label indicates inclusion of lactobacillus
acidophilus or bifidus. You won't see the word probiotics
on the label and "contains live active cultures" does not indicate
probiotics.
Probiotics
are being added to acidophilus and soy milk; Dannon's DanActive
dairy drink. Probiotics products should not linger at room temperature
and don't heat them or the live cultures will be killed. Probiotics
must be consumed on a regular basis to be beneficial.
