Splenda
Q: Is Splenda safe to use?
A: Splenda
is a brand of no calorie sweetener/sugar substitute.
Sucralose,
the sweetening agent in Splenda is made by a process that starts with
sucrose or table
sugar. Three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar (sucrose) molecule
are replaced by three chlorine atoms.
Chlorine
is used to modify the structure
of the sugar molecule and produce sucralose. Chlorine
is a natural element present in many foods (lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms,
melons,
peanut butter,
table salt) and added to most public water supplies. The chlorine
atoms present in sucralose do not separate in the body, nor does sucralose
accumulate in the body.
The
chlorine atoms prevent sucralose from being
broken down for energy making sucralose non-caloric. Over 100 studies
conducted over 20 years document the safety of sucralose. Sucralose
can be used in cooking/baking because it is stable over a wide
range of temperatures.
