Vitamin D

Q: How do I know if I need to take vitamin D supplements?

A: Obesity, limited sun exposure, increased use of sun screen, increased prevalence of breast feeding my increase your risk of vitamin D deficiency. Research is relating low levels of vitamin D to increased risk of heart disease, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance. It is probably not a bad idea for everyone to have their vitamin D OH level checked. Confusion continues regarding which form of vitamin supplement should be recommended. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) or vitamin D3 (cholecalciforil). Currently evidence favors D3. Prescription vitamin D is available only as D2. OTC D3 cost is much lower than prescription D2.
