5 Ways to Supermarket Shuffle this Summer

Summer is coming and often is met with a change to our daily routines. From summer camps, vacations, and more time spent outdoors, keeping a routine when it comes to meals can be challenging. Even during the summer, it’s still important to get a variety of foods to meet you and your family’s everyday needs. We here at Banister Nutrition LLC., know how important it is to keep you and your family fed and healthy during the summer months.

Here are some tips so you’re not stuck in the aisles this summer:

1) Make a list and stick to it.

Although it sounds old-fashioned, not only will a list ensure that you’re getting a variety of nutrients such as lean animal protein, fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, it will help you stick to your budget which helps you save money.

2) Consider buying in bulk.

Compare your options. Many times, you’ll get more bang for your buck when you get foods in bulk. You can find staple foods like flours, salt, and even oatmeal in the bulk section. If you’re in the Oklahoma City area, WinCo has a bulk section at reasonable prices. If you’re not local, there may be bulk stores near you.

3) Buy in-season.

Add in-season fruits and vegetable to your table. Vegetables such as cucumbers, beets, and bell peppers can add additional color and flavor, as well as nutrients. Fruits such as cherries, blackberries, strawberries, and peaches are an easy and fun snack, especially for little ones. In-season produce is often less expensive than the grocery store and tastes better too.

Here are a few local farmers markets you can check out this weekend:
OSU-OKC Farmers Market
Paseo Farmers Market
OKC Farmers Public Market

4) Shop sales, weekly deals and (even consider couponing).

You can save money if you know what deals you’re looking for in the store. Grab a flyer at the entrance or even look up deals online before you leave the house to save time.

5) Explore different grocery stores.

There are many international grocery stores in the Oklahoma City area. If you’re not that adventurous (just yet),  check out other stores in your neighborhood you don’t typically go to. You may find a new favorite brand or food you’ve always wanted to try.

BONUS: If you’re short on time or have the children in toll (or if you just want to try something new):

Consider using a delivery or pick-up service.

Time is precious. With the fast-paced days ahead, delivery and pick-up services can help you in “sticking to the list,” but can also allow you to discover new foods that you may overlook when perusing the aisles on your own.
